Last time I wrote about asking for what you want, and it occurred to me that sometimes we are also reluctant to ask for what we need: help.
A couple of years ago I was having a rough time, nothing was going right, and I had a good old moan to Eleanor, my coach. She listened and then asked why I wasn’t asking anyone for help. I couldn’t answer. She asked when was the last time I asked for help. I couldn’t remember. I seldom ask for help.
We started to explore why. Was I afraid of showing weakness? Or looking stupid? Or being rejected? After some digging I realised that it just never entered my head to seek help. It simply didn’t occur to me
Eleanor challenged me to ask 3 people for help. Nervously, I made a call and sent a couple of emails. The help I had asked for came back quickly, willingly and in much more depth than I would have expected. It led to new opportunities, people who could advise me and some really interesting business. It definitely got me out of my rut.
Spend a few minutes thinking about what help you need and who could provide it. Now pick up the phone or send an email and ask for it.
