I’m hearing this sort a thing a lot lately:
I’m trying to be like [so and so].
I wish I could be more like [whoever].
If I could only be more [whatever] like [doodah].
Please stop.
There’s nothing wrong with trying to improve, learning from others and even borrowing what works well from friends and colleagues.
But trying to be completely like someone else is bloody hard work and a total waste of time.
Why? For a start you don’t have their personality, behavioural style, experience or beliefs.
You may not have their skills and talents.
You have your own and they’re all just as valid and valuable as anyone else’s.
In fact the perfect person you’re trying to be probably wants to be more like you!
As Oscar Wilde said ‘Be yourself, everyone else is taken’.
Appreciate what you’ve got, use your unique talents and build on your strengths where you can.
You’ll be a lot happier, much more confident and find success comes more easily.
